Lydia Davis is on the tram. It turns a corner and she can see her two flatmates—a couple—standing at the approaching stop. Lydia Davis has a feeling that this is supposed to be funny. She decides to ask her flatmates if this situation is ironic. The tram stops and its doors open. Lydia Davis forms a small grin. She bites her lip to keep from laughing. Lydia Davis watches her flatmates standing in line to get on the tram and is unable to control her facial muscles. Lydia Davis' face does a huge grin. She is very excited. The first flatmate gets on the tram, looks at Lydia Davis for a second, and sits down. The second flatmate gets on the tram, doesn't look at Lydia Davis, and sits down next to the first flatmate. "No," Lydia Davis thinks. The tram accelerates away from the stop. Lydia Davis doesn't know what to do. She feels afraid. Lydia Davis slips down, so that the small of her back is resting on the seat, and rides this way until her stop comes.
